The President of the Republic of Somaliland, HE Muse Bihi Abdi, attended a grand ceremony to mark the 37th anniversary of the SNM martyrs’ day which is celebrated annually in the country.

First, the Chairman of the SOOYAL Veterans Association, Mr. Abdirizak Jama Hussein, who spoke on the importance of the SNM  martyrs’ day, said, “The fruits of our martyrs’ labour has not gone to waste but is in fact the very pillars that our government stands on today. The Somaliland community has full respect for these brave veterans and the sacrifices they made for our nation will not be forgotten.” 

Speaking at the event, the Ministers of Water Development, Religion and Endowments, Mr. Ali Hassan Mohamed (Marreexan) and Sheikh Abdirizak Ali Albani, for their part, noted that the history of the SNM is one worthy of commemoration as it tells the story of our country’s struggle for liberation, and passed on to the next generation so they can continue the fight.  

The President of the Republic of Somaliland, H.E. Muse Bihi Abdi who addressed the gathering, first prayed for the veterans who sacrificed their blood, lives and property for the nationhood of the Republic of Somaliland, and that their stories need to be told everywhere. In his remarks, the President said, “The fight against the dictatorship of Siyad Barre was for all Somalis and that all the people in Somaliland today are equally enjoying the fruits of the SNM. Now, it is up to all of us to rebuild and grow our country that was secured with the sacrifices of martyrs and freedom fighters.”
